The Akuapem South Municipality is gradually becoming the hub of teenage pregnancy with little or no practical measures to control the rate at which the canker is gaining ground.
The Municipal Health Director of the area, Emily Ampomsah, revealed that the municipality had recorded 150 teenage pregnancy cases between January and September this year.
The statistics, depicts that Pokrom Sub District recorded the highest rate of 49 cases and Aburi sub with 39 cases, Brekusu sub followed with 31 whilst Obotweri sub and Pakro sub recorded 17 and 14 cases pregnancies respectfully.
This is a serious slap in the face towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goal 3 (SDG3) of the Millennium Development Goal 2030.
Goal 3.7 of the SDG indicates that by 2030 there should be universal access to sexual and reproductive healthcare services, including family planning, information and education, and the integration of reproductive health into national strategies and programmes.
This statistics came to bare when Empowering Minds, a non-governmental organization, assembled stakeholders in the municipality to deliberate on how to “Empower Women To Rescue The Future Generation”.
Queen mother of Aburi and Akuapem Adonten, Awo Adwoa Amene II who was dismayed about the situation called on parents to be more responsible towards the wellbeing of their wards.
She added that, the Traditional authority will as a matter of urgency put forth measures to curb the menace.
Ace Broadcaster, Nana Yaa Kunadu lauded Empowering Minds for bringing major stakeholders in the municipality around the table to discuss such a principal matter.
Mrs. Fidelia Quansah Fiako, CEO and Founder of Empowering Minds, accounted for the need to Empower Women to be able to rescue the youth from social vices.
She’s hopeful that the event will have a positive impact on the society by reducing the rate of teenage pregnancy and other pressing social vices in the municipality.
MOBILE LIBRARY
Empowering Minds has a lot under their sleeves to support education and health in the Akuapem South Municipality.
One of these which starts soonest is the Mobile Library. The Mobile Library seeks to train and educate students in remote areas in the municipality in computing.
Volunteers will be going to these deprived communities with a van full of laptops and other computer accessories to train the students in Information Technology.
