Electric transformers belonging to Electricity company of Ghana(ECG) have become target for thieves in Eastern region.
The phenomenon is on the rise in many communities in the region.
The thieves impersonate as ECG workers day and night to steal copper coils in transformers under the guise of repairing same.
The suspects first trip the high-voltage transformers and smash it to extricate the copper coils after draining out the oil.
The suspects are mostly electricians who commit the acts with other accomplices who keep vigil around and help transport the stolen coils.
Some of the incidents have been recorded in Koforidua and Suhum Districts of ECG leaving a trail of blackouts in the affected areas.
The Eastern Regional Commercial and Marketing Manager of ECG, Abraham Lincoln confirmed this in a message to Assembly members and community leaders in Eastern region to be vigilant and swiftly report any suspicious characters that come closer to ECG transformers.
He said ECG workers are well dressed and identified and most come with branded company vehicles therefore any thing fall short must he immediately reported.
