Three (3) persons have been hospitalized after sustaining serious injuries in explosive waste disposal incident at Asaman in the Okere District of the Eastern Region .
The injured blasters who were disposing off the explosive are receiving treatment at the Eastern Regional Hospital in Koforidua.
Dozens of buildings affected developed deep cracks while many others had its ceilings damaged in Asaman, and Okwenya a nearby community under Yilo Krobo Municipality.
The incident occured in the afternoon of Sunday April 25, 2021.
The explosive incident caused tremor and trauma forcing many residents to escape from their houses to converge at roadside of the community for safety.
Church services were disrupted by the earth tremor caused by the explosion incident .
Mybrytfmonline. com gathers that a Tarkwa based company -Maxam Ghana limited sent the three blasters with explosives waste to dispose on the quarry site owned by one Bright Nuer. But during the burning of the explosive waste , a strong wind carried some of the highly explosive magazines into the fire leading to the accidental blast .
Personnel of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) were in the community for investigation and assesment .
The Deputy Eastern regional Director of the National Disaster Management Organization, Eric Tetteh, told Mybrytfmonline.com that “preliminary investigation indicate that the quarry company gave out the site to another company to dispose its expired explosive magazines which was not done according to established standard operative procedure hence the incident” .
According to him, the Organization was assessing the impact of the incident in the two communities .
Assembly member for Nkurakan -Okwenya, Lawrence Lawyer Kumeh said the incident was traumatic therefore regulators must ensure that it doesn’t happen again.
