Insecurity in Tinkong, a Community in Akuapem North Municipality of the Eastern Region has forced residents to raise funds for the construction of an ultra-modern Police Station.
The absence of a Police station in Tinkong and over a dozen other surrounding Communities has made the area a haven for criminals who escape arrest from Accra and Koforidua to lurk.
Churches and Mobile money operators are major targets of the robbers while homes are sometimes burgled.
Domesticated animals are stolen in large numbers.
Rev King George Nukpezah is resident Minister of the local Presbyterian Church, also Chairman of the committee in charge of the Tinkong Police station project said “Many churches here have been robbed. My church, for instance, has been robbed twice which instruments and other valuables were taken away so this community needs to have a Police station. We are not safe here”
The Chief of Tinkong, Nana Wontumi Toprah IV explained that GHc36,000 was actualized from a fund raising ceremony held to commence the project, while households have been levied.
He said the facility is being constructed according to the specification of the Ghana Police Service as approved by the Inspector General of Police.
The Assembly Member for the area Samuel Abokyi is hopeful the presence of Police in the community with a population of about 8000 would help minimize crime.
The completion of the Tinkong Police station will not only improve security for residents but also commuters who ply the busy Koforidua to Adawso road.
