The Nkawkaw Division of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department of the Ghana Police Service has identified some of the victims of Tuesday’s fatal accident on the Kwahu Atibie to Nkawkaw road.
The deceased persons include two children both 2-year-olds.
According to the MTTD, on Tuesday, May 25, at about 2:30pm suspect driver Fred Amankwah, 26, was in charge Rhino truck with registration number GW 5738-19 on board by nine passengers loaded with chairs, canopies, and some spinning machines from Forifori in the Afram plains South towards Accra, that, on reaching a section of the road whilst descending the Kwahu mountains near Nkawkaw, the driver alleged the brakes failed to respond to the demand of retardation as he applied.
The vehicle ran against the wall barricade by the nearside edge of the road and fell on its side.
Six people including Suspect driver Fred Amankwah, Ayim Godfred, 21, Kofi Adu Twum, 30, Enoch Ofosu, 30, Ramatu, 37, and Blebor Owusu, 2, sustained various degree of injuries and were rushed to Atibie Government Hospital for treatment.
Ramatu and child Blebor Owusu were pronounced dead on arrival and bodies deposited at the same Hospital mortuary.
Three unidentified male adult’s ages between 27 and 42 and a 2-year-old male child who also died on the spot were conveyed and deposited at Nkawkaw Holy Family Hospital mortuary pending identification and autopsy.
According to Sergeant Francis Gomado, acting PRO for Eastern Regional Police Command, the accident vehicle has been towed to Nkawkaw central police station for examination and testing.
