The Member of Parliament for Upper West Akim District, Hon. Drah Emmanuel , has called for the immediate enforcement of a ban on sand winning activities in the district.
This directive follows numerous complaints and reports about the resurgence of illegal sand-winning operations in several communities.
The ban was originally imposed on September 18, 2024, by the former DCE, Hon. Eugene Sackey, to curb the environmental degradation caused by these activities.
However, there has been no formal communication lifting the ban.
In a letter addressed to the relevant authorities, Hon. Drah who is the Member of Parliament for the Area emphasized the importance of maintaining the suspension until a substantive DCE is nominated and approved.
He urged all stakeholders to treat the directive with urgency to prevent further damage to the district’s environment.
The resurgence of sand-winning activities has been reported in key areas across the district, causing concern among residents and environmental advocates.
The MP has called on the Presiding Member and other stakeholders to ensure strict adherence to the directive, promising swift action to address any violations.
