A visibly distraught mother in Koforidua Zongo , Rubi Asante, says her blood pressure has worsened following the inability of authorities to change the school placement of her abled son, who was wrongly placed at the Mampong Presbyterian Senior High and Technical School for the Deaf.
Her son, Sarpong Livingston, completed Resurrection Presby Model Junior High School in Koforidua. He obtained aggregate 42 with a total raw score of 224 in the 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
Despite being an able-bodied student, Sarpong was placed at a special school meant for students with hearing impairment — a placement his mother says has left the family devastated.
According to Madam Rubi Asante, all efforts to correct the placement have so far proven unsuccessful.
She explained that she has visited the Free SHS Regional Secretariat in Koforidua three times, but officials have not been able to resolve the issue.
“I can’t sleep anymore my blood pressure has gone up because my son has refused to eat. I don’t know what to do. I have visited the office many times submitting placement form but they have not changed it for us”.
The worried mother said her son’s dream has always been to pursue technical education, adding that all the schools he selected during the placement process reflected his interest in technical and vocational training.
According to the placement form, Sarpong mistakenly chose Mampong Presbyterian Senior High Technical School for the Deaf as one of the his choices even though not hearing impaired
Other schools selected are Koforidua Senior High Technical School
,Presby Senior High Technical, Adukrom
New Juaben Senior High Commercial School, ti Boateng Senior High School
,Koforidua GRATIS Technical Institute
and St. Stephen’s Presby Senior High Technical School, Asiakwa
Unfortunately, the system placed him in the school for the deaf — one of his lower-ranked choices, which was intended only for applicants with hearing challenges.
Meanwhile, some parents and their wards thronged the Free SHS Secretariat on Monday morning to resolve various placement issues, including change of schools, boarding and day status, and program errors.
The situation has left several students stranded at home even as the official reporting date for first-year students draws to a close.
