Fifteen out of twenty-three New Patriotic Party (NPP) Members of Parliament in the Eastern Region who have declared their unflinching support for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the party’s upcoming race have been described as ‘disgraceful’ and selfish.
Former National Organiser for Friends of Bawuma (FOB), Rev George Opoku Acheampong, in a response was surprised the lawmakers have taken a stand behind one candidate, forgetting they represent party members within the various constituencies.
Addressing the media on behalf of his colleagues , the Member of Parliament for Achiase, Kofi Ahenkorah Marfo, said the decision was a a result of a careful assessment of Dr. Bawumia’s track record and leadership qualities.
The endorsement was formally announced during Dr. Bawumia’s tour in the Eastern region which began in Nkawkaw, the backyard of Bryan Acheapong who is also contesting for the flgabearer position.
Among the 15 MPs backing Dr. Bawumia are Ida Adwoa Asiedu (Ayensuano), Korkor Asante (Atiwa West), Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah (Ofoase Ayirebi), Frank Annoh-Dompreh (Nsawam Adoagyiri), Sammi Awuku (Akuapem North), Kofi Okyere Baafi (New Juaben South), Akwasi Acquah (Oda), Kingsley Agyemang (Abuakwa South), Nana Ampaw Addo-Frempong (Abuakwa North), as well as MPs for Fanteakwa North and South, Frank Asiedu Bekoe (Suhum), Charles Asuako Owiredu (Abirem), and Kingsley Ahenkora Marfo (Achiase).
Meanwhile, speaking to Bryt fm reporter, Rev Opoku Acheampong expressed disappointment in the 15 lawmakers and accused them of leading divisions in the party.
He indicated that, actions and inactions of some MPs and party executives have led to cracks in the NPP and, however, predicted doom for the party if such attitudes are not dealt with holistically.
The National delegates Congress to elect flag bearer for the 2028 Presidential election is scheduled for Saturday, January 31,2026 . In case of a run-off, February 14 , 2026 with five aspirants vying to lead the NPP.
