Terkpetey Michael, a tutor at Abuakwa State College (ABUSCO), has been recognized as the overall best teacher at the inaugural Ghana Education Service (GES) Outstanding Achievement Awards held in Koforidua.
Michael, who teaches Economics and has been in the profession for 15 years, received a brand-new Toyota saloon car, donated by Dr. Kingsley Agyemang, NPP Parliamentary Candidate for Abuakwa North Constituency.
The award ceremony, themed “Inspiring Change: Recovery Begins with Teachers,” saw 405 entries, with 100 shortlisted. A total of 66 teaching and non-teaching staff were honored with various awards, including citations, plaques, refrigerators, flat-screen TVs, gas cylinders, and cooking stoves.
Awards were presented in multiple categories, including Kindergarten, Primary, Junior High School (JHS), Senior High School (SHS) Education, and special categories for schools in deprived communities, leadership roles, and administrative staff.
Additionally, thirty-five performing schools in hard-to-reach areas across thirty-three municipalities/districts were recognized.
Dr. Ivy Asantewa Owusu, Eastern Regional Director of Education,reiterated the need for professionalism, adaptability, and creativity in teaching skills due to unpredictable nature of teaching environment.
She highlighted the awards as a way to honor dedicated educators and inspire others to strive for excellence.
Deputy Minister of Education John Ntim Fordjour praised Ghanaian teachers for their significant contributions to improving education outcomes and WASSCE results.
He said Ghanaian teachers are ranked high worldwide due to their competence.
Professor Emmanuel Adow Obeng, former Vice Chancellor of UCC and chairman of the event, underscored that empowering teachers equates to empowering the nation.
The overall best Teacher, Terkpetey Michael advised ” colleagues to be more dedicated to the service because I think the teaching service is more of a calling than just a profession and so they must do their best, they may put all they have in the job”.
