Angry residents of Huhunya in Yilo Krobo municipality in Eastern Region on Friday blocked a session of the Asesewa to Koforidua Road in protest against excessive dust created on the road under construction.
The protest was triggered by a fatal crash the previous day that left one community member dead with other battling for his life after a commercial vehicle crashed their motorbike due to the dusty nature of the road the community has endured for the past three years with no end in sight due to the slow pace of work by the contractor.
Angry youth of the community constructed four speed rams using sand and gravels to control speed of vehicles particularly trucks being used by the construction firm.
They accused the construction company of failing to adhere to environmental and safety measures of continuous watering of the road to reduce dust that have forced many shops closed, reduced visibility and ultimately causing respiratory diseases among residents particularly children.
Isaac Tetteh Kwame, chief of Huhunya lamented to the media that the dust on the road is creating serious health complications in the community.
An opinion leader in the community accused the contractor of taken the community for a ride by not thinking about their welfare.
Some residents also complained about the how the dusty nature of the road has affected economic activities.
Mavis Dede Donkor Assembly Woman told Bryt FM , upon engagement with the police , the contractor has agreed to frequently water session of the road in the community.
