Saturday 28th September 2024 was exactly a year the seven million cedis fully furnished NICU facility was handed over to managment of the Regional Hospital by Kabaka Foundation.
As part of the visit Nana Owiredu Wadie I donated personal hygiene items to the nursing mothers, food items and also settled all unpaid invoices of babies and nursing mothers on admission at the hospital during his visit.
The doctors and nurses also received Kabaka Foundation branded theatre scrubs.
However, Nana Owiredu Wadie I was confronted with a desperate appeal to save mothers suffering maternal mental health disorders with provision of Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) and electroencephalogram(EEG) .
Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is a medical treatment most commonly used in patients with severe major depression or bipolar disorder that has not responded to other treatments.
ECT involves a brief electrical stimulation of the brain while the patient is under anesthesia.
An electroencephalogram is also a test that measures electrical activity in the brain.
This test also is called an EEG. The test uses small, metal discs called electrodes that attach to the scalp. Brain cells communicate via electrical impulses, and this activity shows up as wavy lines on an EEG recording.
The Eastern Regional Hospital, which is a referral facility however lacks this essential equipment.
Psychiatrists at the Hospital are worried that due to absent of the equipment, pregnant women and new mothers who suffer postpartum depression and psychosis struggle to get holistic treatment.
Dr. Gyanwa Opare Addo Specialist psychiatrist told the media in koforidua that the situation is serious considering the number of maternal health cases recorded at the facility.
“These our mother’s when they are pregnant or they give birth they go through psychiatric conditions like depression, like psychosis etc. And so we will want Nana Owiredu Wadie and Kabaka foundation to come to our aide to help provide an electroconvulsive therapy for the hospital that will help to manage mothers that experience psychosis without having to use medications as we often use”.
She added ” also we would want Nana to provide as an EEG, to help also determine the complications these children who find themselves in the NICU so early to manage well. Also we want Nana to turn an eye to the mental health Unit and also rehabilitate the place so that when this mothers go through this situations we can give them better and a dignified management” Dr. Gyanwa Opare-Addo , Specialist Psychiatrist appealed
Nana Owiredu Wadie I, assured that Kabaka foundation will consider request by the hospital .
The seven million cedis fully furnished NICU facility was built and donated to Eastern Regional Hospital by Nana Owiredu Wadie I in September last year to celebrate his birthday.
He visits the facility every year on his birthday to donate and pay medical bills of Nursing mothers and their babies on admission .
