The Eastern Region is grappling with a high incidence of injector failures across its ambulance fleet, significantly impeding operational efficiency.
At times, up to 50% of the region’s 33 ambulances are rendered inoperative due to injector malfunctions.
As of Monday, May 13, 2024, approximately 10 ambulances in the region have been sidelined specifically due to injector issues.
Additional vehicles serving Ayensuano and Afram Plains South are also grounded due to minor accidents.
The difficulty in sourcing replacement injectors exacerbates the problem, with affected vehicles remaining out of commission for extended periods, sometimes up to three months.
Felix Owusu, Deputy Regional Director in charge of Administration, attributes the recurrent injector breakdowns to substandard fuel products prevalent in the market.
Drivers have been instructed to patronize fuel stations where fuel quality can be reasonably assured.
Despite the challenges, efforts are underway to address the issue.
According to Owusu, the Ghana Ambulance Service has identified a supplier capable of providing the necessary injectors to resolve the recurring problem.
This initiative aims to restore the operational readiness of the affected ambulances and ensure uninterrupted emergency medical services in the Eastern Region.
