Mr. Ike Apaw Gyasi, who visited the scene on Monday, attributed the sporadic fire incidents to unprofessional electricians conducting wiring without proper certification.
He emphasized the necessity of official approval from the New Juaben South Municipal Assembly for any wiring in shops going forward.
The fire, suspected to have been triggered by an electrical fault, ignited around 5:50 PM on Sunday, prompting a swift response from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).
However, upon arrival at 6:10 PM, firefighters faced a formidable challenge as the pump failed to engage, hampering their efforts to extinguish the flames.
Despite the setbacks, the collaborative efforts of firefighters and local residents helped contain the blaze, which engulfed four shops within the market.
Two shops were completely destroyed, while two others sustained partial damage. Thankfully, there were no reported injuries.
Items destroyed in the fire included plastic cups, bowls, spoons, takeaway packs, toilet rolls, and polytene bags, according to GNFS officials.
Market Queens at the Koforidua Central Market seized the opportunity to appeal to the government to fulfill its promise of reconstructing the market, which is currently in a deplorable condition with a faulty wiring system.
They emphasized the urgency of addressing these issues to mitigate the risk of future fire incidents.
