The Nkosuohene of Kwahu Nkwatia, Nana Owiredu Wadie (I), has donated Ggh 100,000 to the Eastern Regional Secretariat of the National Peace Council to support its efforts in promoting peace before, during, and after the December 7 Presidential and Parliamentary elections in the Eastern Region.
The National Peace Council (NPC) is an independent statutory national peace institution established with
core function of preventing , managing , and resolving conflict and to build sustainable peace
The Council is however facing financial and logistical challenges, hindering its ability to carry out its mandate effectively.
The Council does not have adequate vehicles hence members most often use their private cars to work.
Professor Mark Boadu, Eastern Regional Chairman of the Peace Council, explained that, “The council is often held back by few constraints notably financial and logistical”.
According to him ” Contrary to the common believe that Peace Council is rich, I wish to say it has never been so. The Council is not a paid institution. Meaning we are not paid but the Executive officers working there are paid monthly”.
He decried that “In recent times we have been receiving politicization and incessant attacks on the council and its leadership. It is just unfortunately. But of course as citizens we have the responsibility to criticize state institutions but we believe together, constructively build together”.
Nana Owiredu Wadie (I), Nkosuohene of Kwahu Nkwatia who also serves as a Peace Ambassador, highlighted the significance of peace in fostering development, explaining that this motivated his generous contribution.
The donation was announced during the celebration of International Peace Day in Koforidua, where Nana Owiredu Wadie (I) was the guest speaker.
The event, themed “Cultivating a Culture of Peace through Music and Arts in Promoting Peaceful Elections, 2024,” focused on the role of music and arts in advancing peace in the lead-up to the elections.
In a speech delivered on his behalf by Nana Opoku Amankwah II, Kyidomhene of Kwahu Nkwatia, Nana Owiredu Wadie (I) emphasized the powerful role music and arts can play in fostering peace in the country before, during, and after the elections.
John Appiah Bafuor, Eastern Regional Director of the Electoral Commission (EC), also spoke at the event, reaffirming the EC’s commitment to ensuring free, fair, and peaceful elections. He assured that recent issues concerning irregularities in the provisional voters’ register had been resolved, and the final register would be submitted by the Revision Officer, who is a judge, on Friday, September 20, 2024.
