President John Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), expressed deep dissatisfaction with the state of the nation’s economy since relinquishing the presidency in 2017.
President Mahama asserted that under the leadership of Nana Akufo Addo, the economy has suffered severe setbacks, burdening the nation with escalating debt.
Directly targeting the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mahama claimed that the party failed to make significant contributions to the Asuogyaman constituency during its nearly 8 years in power.
Mahama said this when addressing a durbar at Frankadua in Asuogyaman during a two-day Building Ghana campaign tour in Eastern Region.
He alleged a lack of progress in the region, characterizing the past eight years as a period of hardship and poverty, benefiting only a few.
Citing recent electoral events, Mahama commended voters in Assin North for resisting alleged attempts at vote-buying.
He cautioned the residents of Asuogyaman against falling for similar tactics, urging them not to succumb to vote buying and intimidation emphasizing the importance of voting against the misuse of public funds for personal gain.
President Mahama assured the public that, if elected, the NDC would prioritize restoring the economy to bring prosperity to all citizens.
In response to concerns raised by local Chiefs about the collapsed Juapong textile, Mahama pledged collaboration with private investors to revive the textile industry and establish additional factories.
He also highlighted plans to leverage the Tema-Akosombo rail infrastructure initiated during the NDC’s previous term.
Nana Kwaku Budu, Chief of Atimpoku, took the opportunity to appeal to President Mahama for the repair of deplorable roads in the area when he assumes power in 2025.
