The Vice President Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia has announced that SDA College of Education and some few Colleges of Education will soon be coverted to full fledged University colleges .
The Ministry of Education in 2018 announced conversion of all public Colleges of Education into four-year bachelor of education degree-awarding institutions.
According to the ministry, the conversion forms part of reform strategies for education in the country. However, the 46 colleges of Education are affiliated to some traditional universities across the country .
The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission has stated that in considering an expression of interest from a College for conversion, the Commission shall conduct a comprehensive assessment and evaluation of the College using the approved assessment instrument. Special attention shall be given to the faculty capacity and competency, College’s infrastructure, faculty, programme(s), financial and legal status, compliance with tertiary educational delivery regulations and any other requirements that the Commission may deem necessary at a fee to be borne by the applicant.
The report of the conversion shall be submitted to the Minister for Education for onward submission to Cabinet for approval.
Addressing the 14th congregation of SDA College of Education Thursday, Vice President Dr Mahamadu Bawumia stated in a speech read on his behalf by Eastern Regional Minister Seth Kwame Acheampong that,some few Colleges of Education including SDA college of Education are ready to be converted into full fledged university colleges
“i am told the people of New Juaben Traditional Area especially the Asokore Township are committed to swing this college to become a full fledged university college soon. As the President of our Republic Nana Akufo Addo stated sometimes ago, this SDA collage of Education will be numbered among the first few Colleges that will be converted to full university College soon”
Meanwhile ,SDA College of Education in Asokore-Koforidua has introduced a new grading policy starting the 2024/2025 academic year that includes marks for student conduct.
This decision, announced by Principal Prof. Vincent Adzahlie-Mensah, aligns with national teaching standards and emphasizes the importance of ethical values and professional behavior.
Under this grading policy, students’ behavior—including dress code, speech, lecture attendance, and conduct during social gatherings and exams—will impact their grades.
The Principal appealed for construction of ultra modern assembly and lecture halls.
The graduation ceremony saw some 452 first batch of bachelor degree holding students graduate with 10% obtaining first class honours.
