The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the Government of Ghana have launched their 8th Country Program aimed at reducing child marriage, gender-based violence, and maternal deaths in the Eastern region.
According to Faisal Bawa, Program Analyst for UNFPA’s Gender-Based Violence Unit, child marriage is a significant contributor to adolescent pregnancies, with over 100,000 cases reported annually in Ghana.
This he said has severe consequences for the development, health, and education of adolescent girls.
The program will support 11 municipalities and districts in the Eastern region, including Akuapem South, New Juaben North, and Asuogyaman, among others.
Key stakeholders, including Social Welfare, Department of Gender, Ghana Health Service, and others, have been urged to join forces with UNFPA to accelerate action towards addressing these issues.
Eastern Regional Minister, Hon. Seth Kwame Acheampong, highlighted the importance of selecting the Eastern region for this program, acknowledging the efforts of stakeholders in addressing these issues despite challenges.
District Chief Executive for Asuogyaman, Mavis Opokua, expressed optimism that the initiative will help youth in the district overcome underlying challenges.
The program aims to address critical issues affecting the well-being and development of young people, particularly girls, in Ghana’s Eastern region.
