The Eastern Regional Minister, Eric Kwakye Darfour, has stated ardently that, the region is ready to fight the deadly coronavirus disease as his outfit safeguards the health being of its members in the region.
The minister made these assertions during a press briefing in the Eastern Regional capital Koforidua on Friday, April 3, 2020.
According to him, the region through the Health Directorate has put in necessary measures as they embattle the pandemic.
Mr. Kwakye Darfour went on and averred that the Regional Security Council through the various MUSEC and DISECs are monitoring the possible influx of foreign nationals or persons who have traveled outside and returning to the region.
“As of March 31, 2020, the region recorded 33 suspected coronavirus cases. After blood samples were collected and taken to the laboratory, 28 came as negative. On April 1, 2020, one of the suspected cases proved positive. Which literally means, our region has recorded its first case of COVID – 19.” He revealed.
He further stated that the confirmation case in the region means that, they need to put more preventive measures in place to kick against the deadly disease.
“Our people shouldn’t be scared as we are prepared to embattle the virus. All 32 Municipal and District Assemblies would on April 4, undertake a disinfection of their various markets to prevent the spread of the virus. We have been made aware by the health experts that the virus can stay active on hard surfaces for some number of hours”. The minister stated.
He also added that, Therefore, our markets, where several people go to shop are very fragile. The disinfection is to curtail the spread of the virus at the various market centers.” He said.
Mr. Darfour used the medium and beseeched the market women and transport unions to cooperate with the Assemblies in undertaking this important exercise. Also asked media houses especially those in the region to support by educating the people on the importance of the disinfection as they advise them to stay at home safely.
Markets in Koforidua are set to be disinfected on Saturday, April 4, 2020.
