The Eastern Regional Minister Hon Eric Kwakye Darfour has inaugurated an 8 member committee to provide political, cultural and institutional support for the conduct of the 2020 Population and Housing Census in Eastern Region.
Inaugurating the Committee, Regional Minister Eric Kwakye Darfour, highlighted the importance of censuses for national development.
He indicated that periodically there is the need to know the number and characteristics of the population to plan and monitor all economic and social interventions.
The committee consists of a representative from 8 institutions including, Eastern Regional Co-ordinating director as Chairman, director of Regional Population Office, Regional Director of NCCE, rep from regional statistician and GSS, regional director of information service department, regional director of health, regional director of education and rep from regional house of Chief.
According to the regional minister, the United Nations recommends that every country should endeavor to undertake a population census every ten years. A population and housing census is an indispensable governance tool, required to ensure that good governance and democracy work for all.
He said the role of populations and housing census in the development of a nation cannot be over-emphasized in terms of quality of decision making and outcome of development planning.
He said in a strategic move to improve turnaround time for this census, the RCC, chiefs, and people of Eastern Region, will support every step that the GSS will take.
“We shall also mobilize our people to make ourselves available when the census begins, our collective responsibility and interest in this National exercise will optimize operational costs, and increase benefits to our people through increased accessibility”
He also assured all stakeholders that the Eastern Regional Coordinating Council, the chiefs, people and opinion leaders have resolved to work towards a successful census.
He, therefore, wished the committee members well and urged them to work assiduously for the better of the census.
