The Eastern Regional Health Directorate has taken a significant step in addressing the increasing complications and fatalities among diabetic and hypertensive patients by organizing a Case Conference.
This initiative, held under the auspices of the Norad Kente Project at the GNAT Hall in Koforidua, brought together healthcare professionals to tackle the challenges faced by these patients.
Dr. Abigail Doduwah Sackey, the Eastern Regional Non-communicable Disease Coordinator, highlighted the importance of the program in providing patients with vital information necessary for making lifestyle modifications.
“When they go to the hospitals they are unable to have the maximum time to interact with their health workers so this is the platform that NCD headquarters together with NORAD Kente Project have brought together for us to interact with the patience about their conditions.
The takeaway from this meeting is that we health workers are concern about our patience , is not just about us writing medications and diagnosing them only , we also want to know their concerns , someone might be taking diabetic medication for a long time but they are not eating well so like this program we have Nutritionists who came to talk to them and they had time to ask questions which bother them concerning their intake of the right food” she said .
Dr . Doduwah Sackey announced, wellness clinics are being established in communities to encourage regular screening among the local population for early identification of diabetics and hypertension cases among the local population.
A family Physician at Eastern regional hospital, Dr.Nana Yaa Amponsah was worried that complications from the conditions are rising at alarming level.
This complications are increasing very fast so we wanted to get the education out there for people to get to be screened early so that we detect the conditions early and then give a management plan which includes lifestyle modification and the use of medications and then we expect people to be adherence to their management plan so that we can curtail all the complications these conditions come with.
“We have to make a conscious effort to do that because of the lifestyle , people wake up early go to work , go to school very early but we need to make a conscious effort to do exercises in the evening or on the weekends , consciously get the family together and engage in some physical activities about 30 minutes , the recommendation is like 5 to 7 days per week but if you have a very tight schedule consciously weekend we have two days in the weekend you can manage that to get healthy.
She said regular exercise is very important in preventing and managing such conditions.
“You can make use of every little space you have , we can’t continue to make the excuses , you can use your home or go round your home , we may not have a conducive area to engage in these exercises but make use of what you have , just engage in some physical activities and get ride of these risk factors”.
