The Eastern Regional Minister, Hon. Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, has reaffirmed government’s commitment to improving the welfare of Ghanaian workers, stressing the importance of fair wages, safe working environments, and inclusive workplaces.
Speaking at the 2025 Regional May Day Celebration held at Jackson Park, Koforidua on Thursday, May 1, the Minister saluted the contributions and sacrifices of workers across various sectors, describing them as the backbone of Ghana’s development.

“Every hospital, school, factory, road, and community uplifted is made possible by the sweat and dedication of our workforce,” she stated, acknowledging the resilience and sacrifices of workers in the face of national challenges.
Themed “Resetting Pay and Working Conditions in Ghana: The Role of Stakeholders,” this year’s May Day observance highlighted the pressing need for collaborative efforts among government, employers, labour unions, and civil society to improve working conditions and reset compensation structures.
Hon. Awatey disclosed that government has reconstituted the National Tripartite Committee and launched a National Labour Conditions Review Programme to harmonize conditions of service in the public sector. A Living Wage Dialogue is also underway, aimed at establishing a realistic living wage framework reflective of current economic realities.
She further pledged government’s support towards job creation, enhanced pensions, improved labour standards monitoring, and a strengthened social protection system.
“We pledge to stand with workers — not just in words, but in action,” the Minister assured.
Hon. Awatey encouraged labour unions to continue their advocacy in a spirit of collaboration and national development, calling on all stakeholders to reform outdated systems and design sustainable frameworks that meet the demands of the modern labour market.
“Let this May Day be a call to action — to rise, reset, and build a fairer, safer, and more prosperous Ghana for all,” she concluded.
Johnson Edmund Kyeremeh, Chief Industrial Relations Officer, Public Service Workers Union was adjuged overall best Eastern Regional Worker.

Miss Hellen Osei -Poku was also adjusted Eastern Regional best Female Worker.
Abraham Lincoln, Eastern Regional Commercial Manager of ECG was also adjust best Public Utility worker of the year in the region.
