The Eastern Regional Minister, Hon. Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey,on Tuesday February 4,2024 officially assumed .
She was given a warm welcome by staff of the Regional Coordinating Council after which a close door meeting held with management.
Speaking at a staff engagement subsequently at the Eastern Regional Coordinating Council (ERCC) the Minister emphasized the devastating impact of illegal mining (galamsey) in the region, particularly its effect on river bodies, forest reserves, and agricultural lands.
The Eastern Region has been severely affected by illegal mining, leading to polluted water sources, degraded lands, and deforestation, especially in the Atewa Forest Reserve.
Hon. Adjei Awatey stressed the urgent need for responsible and sustainable mining practices, stating “We must ensure that our people mine responsibly so that our forests, lands, and water bodies are protected.”
She further announced plans to improve water and sanitation, promising access to quality and safe drinking water for communities affected by mining pollution.
As part of her leadership approach, Hon. Adjei Awatey announced plans to tour the region to engage chiefs and citizens for firsthand information on infrastructure and development challenges, review the handing-over notes from her predecessor to ensure continuity in governance ,and
enhance education and healthcare services across the region.
The Minister also noted lack of mobile network in some communities stated that she will champion the expansion of telecommunications access through the rural telephony project to improve connectivity.
Rita Akosua Adjei Awatay also touched on job creation to provide employment opportunities for the youth to drive economic growth, improve road networks, particularly in farming communities, to facilitate the transportation of foodstuffs to market centers and Strengthen security measures to ensure the safety of residents and reduce crime.
The Minister urged ERCC staff to set aside political differences and focus on delivering quality public service. She emphasized the need for a professional, ethical, and inclusive work environment, stating:
“The campaign period is over. Now, we must bring everyone on board for the betterment of the region. Let us put politics aside and be guided by the core values of our work.”
She further encouraged honesty, fairness, and collaboration among staff to create a harmonious and productive workplace.
The Eastern Regional Coordinating Director, Yaw Adu Asamoah, provided an overview of the RCC staff strength, revealing a total of 222 personnel – comprising 144 males and 76 females, with 72 senior officers and 150 junior officers.
He assured the Minister of the full cooperation and dedication of civil servants in implementing government policies and driving development in the region.
