Eastern Regional Minister Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, accompanied by Members of Parliament for Upper West Akyem Emmanuel Drah and Lower West Akyem Owen Frimpong, as well as the Engineering Unit of the Ghana Armed Forces, visited the farming community of Asuokow on Monday.
The visit follows the circulation of a viral video showing school children crossing a river without a bridge to access education a situation which caught the attention of President Mahatma.
The section of the river where the children were seen crossing has become an alternative route for residents due to safety concerns on the main road, including incidents of pedestrian knockdowns.
The lack of a bridge has forced the community, particularly children, to take dangerous routes to reach schools and other essential services.
The story of these children in Asuokow reached the highest levels of leadership when President John Mahama came across the viral video.
Moved by the children’s plight, he pledged immediate action. He tasked the MP for the area and the Eastern Regional Minister Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey to visit the community. He was joined by the Engineering Unit of the Ghana Armed Forces.
She assured a bridge will be constructed soon.
For the two children, Wise and Alhaji whose video has gone viral, accessing education is not just a right—it’s a risk they had to endure live their dream of being military officers
Parents of the children expressed gratitude to the president.
