The Eastern Regional Minister, Seth Kwame Acheampong has paid a familiarisation tour to Newmont Ghana, a large-scale mining company in the Birim North District of the Eastern Region.
The tour forms part of the Minister’s zeal and enthusiasm to abreast himself with the activities of such businesses in the region.
It also allowed him to have first-hand knowledge and information on the challenges and feats of the company.
“I continued the familiarization tour yesterday as I paid a working visit to Newmont Ghana, Akyem Mine, a mining company in the Birim North District of the Eastern Region.
The tour forms part of my mission to be abreast with the activities of such businesses in the region. It also gave me first-hand knowledge and information on the challenges of the company” the Minister said.
Newmont Ghana operates on two pits, the one point seven-kilometer-long Akyem Main Pit and the East Pit.
The company is reclaiming three times of the acquired 101-hectare area of the Adjenua Bepo Forest reserve for the open-pit mine, by undertaking a 60-hectare reforestation program.
Mr. Acheampong planted a tree in support of the exercise, which is being undertaken jointly by Newmont Ghana and the Forestry Commission.
He was impressed with the safety protocols at the company and advised other such companies to emulate their example, as well as undertake the reforestation exercise.

The company’s Director of Communications and External Relations, Kwame Agbeko Azumah was grateful for the Minister’s visit.
In attendance were Eastern Regional Coordinating Council Chief Director – Mr. Samuel Donkor, New Abirem District Chief Executive – Mr. Raymond Nana Damptey, General Manager of Newmont Ghana Akyem-Mine – Daniel Egya-Mensah.
