The Electoral Commission of Ghana has withdrawn two temporal staff from the ongoing parliamentary by-election at Ejisu in Ashanti region over alleged bribery.
A statement issued by Samuel Tettey, Deputy Chairman in charge of operations at the commission said,the Commission’s attention has been drawn to a video circulating on social media depicting one of the Polling Stations at the ongoing Ejisu Constituency By-Elections.
The statement said the Polling Station has been identified as the Fumesua Pentecost Church Polling Station with Polling Station Code F311503.
“The video shows a gentleman approaching the table and dropping an envelope on the table manned by the Presiding Officer and Ballot Issuer.
Electoral Commission has taken immediate steps and has withdrawn the two (2) temporary staff while investigations take place”.
The statement added that, “Commission upholds the principles and values of integrity, truth and transparency. These values are reinforced during the training of all temporary staff. The Commission will not countenance acts which cast a slur on the integrity of the institution and will not hesitate to sanction its officials who violate its laws”.
The report on the incident will be made available to the public in due course.
Voting is ongoing in the Ejisu constituency today Tuesday, April 30, 2024, to elect a new Member of Parliament (MP) for the area.
This comes on the back of the demise of former New Patriotic Party (NPP) lawmaker John Kumah.
Voting is taking place in all 204 polling centers in the constituency for 106,812 voters to cast their votes in the by-election running from 7 am to 5 pm.
The election is keenly being contested between the NPP candidate Kwabena Boateng and former MP Kwabena Aduomi, who is running independently after quitting the NPP.
The opposition National Democratic Congress opted out of the election.
Six persons including three independent candidates, are contesting the much talked about by-election.
