Power thieves must report themselves.
Addressing the media in Koforidua on the sidelines of the visit on Monday, June 13, 2022, the Director of Customer Service A.Anokye Abebreseh said management has identified technical and commercial losses as two major challenges facing the company hence an effort to reduce the quantum of commercial loses once and for all by getting rid of all electrical illegalities to improve the revenue mobilization.
He said though technical and commercial losses are inherent globally in the power distribution sector, the huge commercial losses in Ghana are unacceptable.
ECG, therefore, called on customers who have not been receiving bills, prepaid customers who do not purchase electricity credit, customers with faulty meters, those who have tempered their meters, and all those engaged in any form of illegality must own up within a month moratorium instituted by the company or risk being smoked out and prosecuted.
“To reduce the commercial losses once and for all, ECG has to clean the system of all electrical illegalities and improved the revenue of the company. We have for the first time in our history introduced a moratorium for customers before auditing all meters, consequently beginning June 7, 2022, to July 6, 2022 customers with issues such as postpaid customers who have not been receiving bills, prepaid customers who do not purchase electricity credit, customers with faulty meters for change of meters, customers who have bypassed or tempered with their meters therefore not paying the full cost of power usage, customers who have engaged in any form of electrical illegality, all these groups of customers are to report to our district offices for the rectification of the issues”
He added “Customers with any other issue stated above should visit any of our district or customer service offices to report and they will be given a report slip whilst ECG keeps a counterfoil as a prove to follow up and rectify the anomalies”
Anokye Abebreseh said after June 7, 2022, to July 6, 2022 moratorium, the national revenue mobilization task force will embark on the intensive audit of ECG’s meters to fish out illegal connections and usage of power for prosecution.
“Urged all customers to take advantage of this amnesty since after the deadline the national revenue mobilization task force will resume operation, any customer caught stealing power will be charged with offense of stealing by the law and names published widely”
The Minister of Energy Matthew Opoku Prempeh revealed a month ago during the ministry’s ‘meet the press’ briefing in Accra that, Technical and commercial losses of about GH¢3.2billion are threatening the future of state-owned power distributors – the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
