Hassan Ayariga, a businessman and politician, has urged the government to forbid people and companies from charging for their goods and services in foreign currencies.
No contracts should be awarded in foreign currencies, he continued, in order to support the cedi against those currencies.
He claimed that these steps were necessary to safeguard the cedi as the sole form of payment in the economy.
Additionally, it will slow down the rate of the local currency’s depreciation versus foreign currencies and assist maintain its value.
“Why do we have to trade in and buy property in dollars when we are not a dollar nation?” Mr Ayagira, who is the founder of the All People’s Congress (APC), queried.
Speaking to the media last Sunday (Sept. 4) at his 50th birthday party in Accra, Mr Ayariga also encouraged the Bank of Ghana not to let foreign exchange companies operating there tell it how much should be sold off the dollar each day.
