The Minister of Education, Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh on Thursday inaugurated the Eastern Regional Chapter of Free Senior High School Graduates Association.
The event was attended by hundreds of first batch beneficiaries of the policy who recently completed school.
They were bused from various Districts in the region to march on the streets of Koforidua holding various placards with inscriptions commending President Akufo-Addo for the intervention.
They converged at the Cultural Center where the inauguration ceremony was held.
Inaugurating the association, the Education Minister Mathew Opoku Prempeh said the free SHS policy implemented by President Akufo is unprecedented in the history of Ghana and bigger than what Ghana’s first President Kwame Nkrumah introduced.
He urged beneficiaries of the policy to vote massively for President Akufo Addo to help secure the policy to enable their younger brothers and sisters to continuously enjoy the policy.
Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh announced that government will from December 1, 2020, open a scholarship application portal for all to apply for scholarship packages to attend tertiary education assuring that, children in rural areas who performed very well in the WASSCE will get an automatic scholarship to tertiary institutions.
Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh also revealed to the free SHS beneficiaries that, the government has also made it more flexible for students to access Students loan by removing the guarantor system which was a major hindrance.
Present at the event were Deputy Minister of Education in Charge of TVET, Gifty Twum Ampofo, Registrar of Scholarship Secretariat, Kingsley Agyemang, New Juaben South Parliamentary Candidate of NPP, Michael Okyere Baafi, Jerry Osei Opoku -Eastern Regional Youth Organizer among hosts of other top echelons of the NPP.
