The Eastern Regional Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), Mr Kwadwo Daase has disclosed that his outfit is wasting much resources for water treatment due to illegal mining in some part of the country.
To him, GWCL has put tremendous efforts in place to serve its customers but illegal mining is making it difficult to pursue its agenda.
Mr Daase said the GWCL is suffering the consequences of bad attitude among some Ghanaians, adding the company has shut down the Osino Water Plant due to illegal mining in the Fanteakwa South district.
Commenting on the first quarter of 2023 utility tariffs adjustment by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), Mr Daase said PURC would have increased water tariff relating to the electricity tariff (29.96 percent) .
He added that GWCL will work with the 8.3 percent approved by the PURC.
He again stated that the company wastes a lot of resources using electricity and importing chemicals for water treatment.
Speaking in an interview with Nhyiraba Nartey Solomon of Bryt Fm, Mr Daase applauded President Akufo-Addo for fighting galamsey in some parts of the country adding it should be a collective responsibility of all stakeholders.
Mr Daase, however, cautioned the Ghanaians to desist from illegal connections to help improve its services to its customers.
Meanwhile, PURC released a statement track and incorporated changes in key factors used in determining natural gas, electricity, and water tariffs.
The PURC has adjusted electricity tariff by 29.96 percent, the Weighted Average Cost of Gas increased by 6.095 dollars per MMBTU and water 8.3 percent.
As a result of the tariff review decision, utility consumers will now pay more for electricity, gas, and water in the first quarter of 2023.
