Ghana’s president, His Excellency Akufo-Addo, has made it clear that he believes Vice President and recently elected NPP flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, would easily defeat NDC candidate John Mahama in the 2024 presidential election.
Akufo-Addo expressed his congratulations and stated that he thought Dr. Bawumia could bring the NPP’s grassroots members together in order to win the general elections in 2024.
Speaking at the Accra Sports Stadium to members of the elephant fraternity, President Akufo-Addo urged party members to cooperate in order to prevent former President John Mahama from winning the 2024 elections.
“I am passing on the flagbearer role of our party after you have honoured me to lead this party, and you have allowed me to serve this great party. I cannot forget. I have done my best, but I am still left with one thing to do, and that is to help elect Bawumia as president. So let us pull together to ensure [John] Mahama does not return to power.”
In addition, President Akufo-Addo commended the party’s leadership—both local and national—for a valiant battle well-fought.
“I am confident Bawumia will be able to unite this party, with the help of the other three contestants, to inflict a successful defeat on Mahama.”
Three other candidates, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, a former Minister of Agriculture; Kennedy Agyapong, the outspoken MP for Assin Central; and Francis Addai-Nimoh, a former MP for Mampong, were beaten by Dr. Bawumia.
