The Judicial Service says they are open to media criticism even if it is violently done however called on the media not to abuse the Judges for the decision taken.
“When judges speak, that is the end of our roles, it is not in our place to get into studios, into debates, commentaries, that responsibility falls to you [Media]…let’s be constructive, we are happy to be criticized. Criticize us as violently as you can but for Christ’s sake, don’t insult us. Don’t berate us, don’t speak hatred, and don’t malign us,” Justice Yoni Kulendi said during a media interaction on Wednesday ahead of the delivery of the 2020 Election Petition.
The media interaction was necessitated by recent exchanges between the media and the Judiciary over a statement issued by the Judiciary ordering media houses to delete publications against the Judges sitting on the election petition. The GJA described the statement as scandalous and a threat to media freedom.
At Wednesday’s media engagement between the media, the Judiciary, and the Ghana Bar Association, the President of the Ghana Journalists Association, Roland Affail Monney acknowledged the professionalism of the media men and women in the coverage of the Election Petition.
He however urged them to uphold the high standards of Professionalism on Thursday when the judgment on the election petition is delivered.
