Electorates in Burundi have given another five-year term for ruling party with 68.72 per cent of the vote in 2020 election.
The final election results will be declared by the Constitutional Court on June 4 but national election commission, in results streamed live on Burundian media, announced that ruling party candidate Evariste Ndayishimiye has won.
Evariste Ndayishimiye is among the most influential political figures in Burundi and a close ally of President Pierre Nkurunziza.
Mr Ndayishimiye, 52, is a former minister of interior and security and runs the department of military affairs in the president’s office.
He is a former rebel combatant of the National Council for the Defense of Democracy–Forces for the Defense of Democracy (CNDD-FDD) who survived the ethnic cleansing of Hutu students at the University of Burundi in 1995.
The election was conducted with scant regard to the coronavirus outbreak — which has been largely ignored — and on top of a potential public health crisis, the opposition looks set to contest the outcome of the election.
