John Jinapor, the Minister of Energy and Green Transition, has declared that all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) must now account for their power consumption in their budgets.
Jinapor emphasized that MDAs must be accountable for their electricity bills during a meeting between the Energy Committee and different power sector agencies on Thursday, May 15. He also explained that certain exemptions have been granted to vital institutions.
“All MDAs are supposed to pay for their electricity bills. They have to budget for it. These include the health sector, education, security agencies, and the presidency. Even with that, in the health sector, it is the laboratories, theatres, and wards that will be exempted.
“In the educational sector, dormitories and restaurants are not included; it is just the lecture halls. We have classified these, and parliament is approving, so we can publish them,” he said
The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition further declared that, because existing fuel supplies are only expected to last 2.6 days, it is urgently looking for 1.1 billion Ghana Cedis to buy liquid fuel for power generation.
