Management of Eastern Regional Hospital, Koforidua, ERHK, is expected to commission the first renal dialysis center in the Eastern region at the Regional Hospital today Wednesday, February 23, 2022.
This is good news to residents of the Region as many patients who need renal dialysis services will no longer travel to Accra or Kumasi to access the critical services.
The Medical Director of the Eastern Regional Hospital Dr. Arko Akoto Ampaw in a recent engagement with the media said Kidney diseases are rising every month in the region.
He said 43 acute cases were referred from the wards for renal dialysis service.
Meanwhile, as of December 2021, the newly established renal dialysis center at the hospital had 20 regular and 5 irregular clients.
Kidney disease affects over 100 million adults worldwide, which is one of the leading causes of death in Ghana and remains a devastating medical, social, and economic problem for patients, families, and society worldwide.
The only treatments available for patients who progress to “End-Stage Renal Failure” (ESRD) are Dialysis or Kidney Transplant.
According to the Medical Director of the Regional Hospital, Dr. Akoto Ampaw, the commissioning of the Dialysis Centre /Unit in the hospital will help save lives with the aim of “improving the health and well-being of people with advanced kidney disease initiating and receiving dialysis therapy with a complication-free, and completely restorative of kidney health”.
Aside from the commissioning of the center, the hospital will be embarking on the promotion of Key Messages and behavioral practices on tips to prevent Kidney Diseases and tips for Healthy Kidneys.
Some of these messages include maintaining a healthy weight, following a healthy diet, Workout regularly / Exercise Avoid Alcohol, Quit smoking, Lower salt in your diet/ Avoid extra salt Moderate medication/use medications with caution Stay hydrated Regular medical check-ups/ Screening.
