Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the minority leader, has claimed that National Security agents broke into the home of Dr. Ernest Addison, the former governor of the Bank of Ghana, on Wednesday, March 19, and took assets from the household, including cash and jewelry.
Afenyo-Markin claims that the agents removed an undisclosed sum of cedis from Dr. Addison’s bedroom under the direction of Richard Jakpa, Director of Special Operations at the National Security Secretariat.
He also said that Dr. Addison’s wife’s necklaces and jewelry were taken by the security guards.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, March 20, Afenyo-Markin denounced the raid as illegal and an abuse of authority.
He urged President John Mahama to act right once to bring the involved operatives under control.
“Some GHC10,000 on his bed could not be found. So some of these hungry party foot soldiers they use who parade themselves as National Security Operatives are after all perhaps not being paid and they use this opportunity to steal.
“The governor’s wife’s earrings and necklaces were also not traced. They couldn’t be found. In other words, those operatives stole these earrings and necklaces. Ghana is a matured democracy and we should do better.”
The raid, which happened at Dr. Addison’s private home in Roman Ridge, Accra, has raised serious questions about how security personnel have been acting under the current government.
According to eyewitness accounts, the heavily armed officers—some of whom were carrying AK-47 rifles and wearing balaclavas—disabled the CCTV system before conducting a search of the residence.
By pointing to a similar raid on the home of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta in February 2025, Afenyo-Markin further suggested that this was not a unique incidence.
He called on human rights activists and civil society groups to speak out against what he called a concerning trend of political persecution.
The National Security Secretariat and the administration have not yet addressed the accusations.
Nonetheless, there are increasing demands for a separate inquiry into the raid and the purported wrongdoing of security guards.
