The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Hannah Bisiw says proposal by John Mahama to establish a National Women’s Bank in Ghana, is aimed at bridging the financial inclusion gap and economically empower women across the country.
This bank will provide financial services specifically tailored for women-owned businesses.
Hannah Bisiw, the NDC National Women’s Organizer, expressed optimism about the initiative, stating that the proposed bank would offer much-needed financial support to women, allowing them to expand their businesses. According to Bisiw, women make up 50.7% of Ghana’s population and own approximately 44% of micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), which account for about 92% of all businesses in the country.
Bisiw also criticized the ruling NPP government for its handling of the banking clean-up exercise, which she claims has led to the collapse of microfinance and small loan companies, making access to loans more challenging.
The NDC also plans to set up a $50 million fintech Transformative Growth Fund to promote financial inclusion.
During the Eastern Regional Women’s Wing’s 24-hour economy campaign tour in the Suhum constituency, traders expressed dissatisfaction with the economic hardships and disruptions to their businesses. They cited a lack of market infrastructure as a reason they might vote against the NPP government.
The Suhum Constituency Women’s Organizer, Lydia Ohenewah, emphasized that the NDC Parliamentary candidate Kwadwo Addo Tabiri is committed to building a modern market center in Suhum, which would include updated facilities such as a school and clinic.
The campaign event was attended by various NDC officials, including former Gender Minister Oye Oye Bampoe Addo, Deputy Eastern Regional Women’s Organizer Rita Awatey, and Evelyn Korang, a former Regional Women’s Organizer now in charge of the middle belt, Margaret Ansei Magoo.
