As the deadly disease, Covid-19 coronavirus various keep on killing thousands of people and spreading Worldwide, Some unions and political leaders in Ghana are calling for lock down to avert spreading as the country record 24 cases and one death.
A senior Research Scientist and Lecturer at the Department of Medical Diagnostics at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Dr. Michael Owusu says 50 to 60 percent of Ghanaians are likely to be exposed to the deadly coronavirus if safety etiquettes are not properly observed with increasing cases of community transmission.
The Trades Union Congress, TUC, has called on the government to implement “more aggressive measures” to curb the continuous spread of the novel coronavirus in the country.
According to the TUC, the government should implement a total lock-down if need be.
A lockdown is a state of isolation or restricted access instituted as a security measure in the wake of a crisis situation such as the coronavirus pandemic.
A statement signed by its General Secretary, Dr. Yaw Baah, said, “Mr. President, the risk of spread of the virus in Ghana remains high. We need more aggressive measures to protect the people from this deadly virus, including a lockdown if that is what is needed to protect the people.”
Meanwhile, Founder and Leader of the All People Congress (APC) Hassan Ayariga is calling for an immediate lockdown to prevent the spread of the coronavirus in the country.
He believes a total lockdown will be the best answer to prevent the spread.
In a statement, he said: “Today the world is confronted with the deadly disease COCID-19. Every nation is struggling to help and protect its citizens. Ghanaian doctors, nurses, and health workers are trying their best to help the situation, but let’s concentrate on preventive measures, education, and control first rather than testing.
In a related development; the Bureau of Public Safety has called for the “immediate discriminated lockdown” of Greater Accra and Ashanti Regions for at least 21 days.
The Bureau also called for the lockdown of all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) and all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs).
It added that essential services could be exempted from this lockdown.
In the urge to the government, the Bureau also called on the President “to draw from lessons from countries such as China, Italy, etc which have been hard hit by the pandemic and timely actions of Rwanda which has fewer cases yet has taken that bold decision to lockdown.”
