The Minister for Education, Dr. Yaw Adutwum, has revealed that SHS education will from 2023 be shifted from 3 years to 6 years.
The Minister made this revelation in Accra on Tuesday, December 14, he met the media in a presser.
The Minister indicated that the decision forms part of efforts to transform secondary education in Ghana with Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) at the center.
He further said the number of high schools in Ghana is going to be reduced from 13,000 to about 2,500 after the county education system and that, the number of high schools in Ghana is going to be reduced from 13,000 to about 2,500 after the county education system.
However, renowned educationist, Counsellor Daniel Fenyi, reacting to the development has indicated that the problem of Ghana’s education system is not about duration.
He stressed that the problems of our education system are poor infrastructure and facilities, poor conditions of service for teachers, lack of curriculum and textbooks, lack of electricity and internet access, among others.
According to Counsellor Daniel Fenyi, even if the Minister extends the ‘duration’ of education to 100 years and does not provide these essential facilities, students will still graduate and become ‘useless’ to society.
He, therefore, encouraged the Minister to focus on providing a conducive learning environment for Ghanaian children and stop the unnecessary fan fair.
The educationist wondered why the Education Minister has abandoned the basic school without providing them with curriculum and textbooks after the introduction of the new curriculum three years ago and rather focused on irrelevant matters like “duration” of secondary education.
He believes when the right educational environment is created for the students, even a one-year secondary education will be enough for them to obtain quality education and become useful to society.
