The Ghana Society of Biomedical Engineers, GSBE, says government failure to recruit more biomedical engineers to health facilities in the Country is fueling an unprecedented rate of breakdown and short life span of medical equipment.
At the third National Biomedical Engineering Conference in Koforidua, the Eastern Regional capital, the professional body called on the government to recruit more Biomedical Engineers and resource them to provide quality services at the various health facilities in the country.
The Head of the Biomedical Planning Unit in Ghana, Dr. Polycarp Asman who made the call said the inadequate biomedical engineers and in some cases lack of Biomedical Engineers in hospitals remains a major setback to quality healthcare.
The Ghana Society of Biomedical Engineering professionals were formed to bring together members under one umbrella to push for recognition and importance in the development of the country.
It is also to exercise professional supervision over members to maintain a high standard of professional competence and conduct. Biomedical engineering is the application of the principles and problem-solving techniques of engineering to biology and medicine.
This is evident throughout healthcare, from diagnosis and analysis to treatment and recovery.
The society has over one hundred thousand members throughout the country.
The conference was used to take stock of the past and strategized ahead to put society on a good path.
It was also used to elect new national executive members to steer the affairs of the society in the next four years.
The Head of the Biomedical Planning Unit in Ghana, Dr. Polycarp Asman highlighted more on the challenges facing them.
The Deputy Minister of Health, Mr. Mahama Asei Seini, underscored the importance of Biomedical Engineers in the healthcare delivery system and therefore implored other professionals’ especially healthcare givers and administrators to be very accommodating to them in their health facilities.
He promised to help them solve some of the challenges confronting them.
The outgoing President of the Society, Prof. Elsie Kauffmann thanked the members for their support and offered her to run the society for the past five years. She highlighted some of her achievements for society.
Awards were given to the members who contributed to the growth of the society.
