About 400,000 tree seedlings are being planted in Fanteakwa North District in the Eastern Region as part of the Green Ghana Day.
The tree planting exercise is led by the Forestry Commission ,the district Assembly in collaboration with other stakeholders including Ghana Education Service.
The ceremonial tree planting was held in Begoro Presbyterian Senior High School Friday June 10,2022.
Acting Chief of Begoro Traditional area Osabarima Bosompem Ayirepe II encouraged every household to plant a tree and nurture same to help restore the lost vegetation in the area.
He said the initiative must be sustained by future governments to green Ghana to help mitigate climate change.
The District Chief Executive for Fanteakwa North , Charles Tweneboah Oware said the district is taking advantage of the president’s green Ghana initiative to replenish depleted forest reserves in the district.
He said the assembly will continue to deepen collaboration with stakeholders to continue the tree planting exercise throughout the year.
The Begoro District Forestry Manager Amankwah Omane is impressed with the growth of trees planted last year stating that the survival rate in the district is 85%.
He said , Green clubs will be formed to whip up tree planting among children and the youth to help sustain conservation and environmental Stewardship mindset.
Meanwhile, about 3.7 million tree seedlings have been raised by the Forestry commission in Eastern Region for planting across the region this year as part of the Green Ghana Tree Planting.
This year’s Green Ghana exercise is focusing on restoring the country’s forestry, for which reason most of the trees will be planted in forest reserves particularly areas depleted by illegal mining
