A popular poultry farmer in Bibiani Ahodwo a suburb of Bibiani in the Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai Municipality of the Western North Region Samuel Kwarteng Mensah has made a distressed appeal to the government to help him revive his poultry business after bird flu ravaged his farm
Over 5,100 birds on the farm have been killed after a bird flu outbreak.
Speaking to Joy Daddy Multimedia’s Lord FM News Correspondent Hamza Mohammed during the burial and disinfection of the area by the Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai Municipal environmental health officers he said, he secured a loan and invested over Gh¢120million but lost all to the outbreak leaving him in huge indebtedness.
“We noticed that 30 birds were dead so we took their bodies away. Then we started to find a solution but a few hours later 50 other birds died. So we took some of the birds to the laboratory for testing but they couldn’t figure out the cause so they took some to Takoradi and Accra for testing until it was confirmed that my farm has been struck by bird flu. So they came to kill over 5,100 birds here. I have invested all that I have in this business so it is not easy. As we speak I owe maize suppliers about Ghc7,200. I have invested over Ghc120million in this poultry business which has been a loss to bird flu so I am pleading to the government to support me get a soft loan to revive the businesses”. Samuel Kwarteng lamented.
On his part, the Municipal Environmental Health Officer Cephas Dzaka who led a team to annihilate the rest of the birds on the farm as a control measure to curb the spread of the disease in the Municipality said, they have adopted a new strategy in burying the birds to discourage unscrupulous people who sneak to exhume, prepare them and sell to unsuspecting consumers.
According to him, the strategy includes the application of strong chemicals on the birds in the grave during burial.
The Municipal NADMO officer Mr. Asante Agyarpong said his outfit has informed the necessary authorities about the outbreak of the bird flu in the Municipality for urgent intervention.
