Mr. Stephenson Anane Boateng, President of the Ghana National Association of Cocoa Farmers, recently discussed the challenges facing cocoa farmers on BRYT FM’s Adekyee mu nsem show, hosted by Kwamina Sam Biney.
During the November 5, 2024 interview, he addressed concerns about cocoa hoarding, as farmers hold back their produce in hopes of better prices.
Mr. Boateng noted that while farmers are hopeful for improved pricing, current market conditions, influenced by Côte D’Ivoire’s lead in production, are affecting their livelihoods.
He emphasized the importance of supportive pricing for farmers’ continued efforts in cocoa production.
He also pointed out that the government is struggling to provide adequate funding for farmers, which directly impacts national revenue.
With rising cocoa prices in neighboring countries like Togo and Burkina Faso, some farmers are resorting to smuggling for better rates.
Mr. Boateng clarified that this issue is often mis-attributed to farmers, who lack the means to export cocoa independently.
Despite feeling overlooked, he affirmed the association’s unity in advocating for better cocoa prices and protecting the future of the industry, underscoring their commitment to sustainability and profitability in cocoa farming.
