Economist and statesman Dr. Cadman Mills has called on the government to put up strategic measures to combat irresponsible mining activities as a matter of urgency.
According to him, government must focus on fighting galamsey than putting all efforts in stabilizing the cedi in the country.
He emphasized that stabilizing the cedi cannot justify the destruction of human lives and the environment.
“It is killing us. The pollution of our water bodies, the destruction of farmlands, and the health hazards facing our people are too high a price to pay for cedi recovery,” said Dr. Mills.
Dr. Mills added that prioritizing economic indicators over human well-being reflects misplaced national priorities. He indicated that sustainable development should remain the guiding principle of economic management, not quick fixes driven by destructive activities.
Dr. Mills called on government and regulatory bodies to intensify enforcement measures against illegal mining while promoting alternative livelihood programs for communities that depend on galamsey for survival.
