As part of the strategic measures to improve sustainability in the cocoa sector, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has called on Ghanaians to join the fight against illegal mining in the country.
President Akufo Addo said the fight against illegal mining for the protection of the environment is a collective responsibility of the general public.
He indicated that the sustainability of the cocoa sector is contingent on how effectively the country will fight the devastating effect of illegal mining.
Speaking at the 38th edition of National Farmers Day Celebrations in Koforidua in the Eastern region, President Akufo Addo pleaded with the farmers and citizens to campaign against galamsey to help protect the inheritance of our forefathers.
Addressing the major marketing challenges in the agriculture sector, the President disclosed that the government has taken measures by constructing eighty (80) warehouses which include 1000 metric tons’ capacity each for food storage and to reduce post-harvest losses adding that 65 of the 80 have fully completed, handed over and are currently in use.
He affirmed that the government has started the Youstart program to provide training entrepreneurs skills and financial support to entrepreneur youths to help them start, build and grow their businesses in the country.
President Akufo Addo averred the Youstart program is a very important vehicle for equipping the youths to enter agro-based business including import distribution and value addition and leveraging digital technology.
He added that the government has capitalized 750 million euros through Ghana of Ghana to prioritize agriculture and its activities which overwhelming evidence point an impressive performance by the government in peruse an agriculture modernization and transformation agenda
President Akufo Addo said that fish and aquaculture development is an essential component of the country’s economic development by employment to three million people, promoting value addition in the fisheries sector.
He assured that government will continue to implement sustainable fish management measures to help conserve marine fishing resources to sustain the sector for future generations.
