Parts of the Eastern Regional capital have been engulfed with filth, especially within the township of Koforidua. A visit to the scene revealed that most lorry stations in the area are surrounded by heaps of refuse.
Footage from the Kumasi and Asesewa stations, located close to All Nations University, highlights the severity of the situation. Pearfaith, a reporter in the Eastern Region, took it upon herself to draw public attention to this growing menace.
Recently, the President of Ghana, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, relaunched the national sanitation project aimed at reducing waste across the country. However, the current state of the lorry stations shows that little progress has been made.
Some drivers at the Kumasi station described the situation as a major health risk. According to them, both drivers and market women are exposed daily to foul odors and poor sanitary conditions, which could lead to serious health complications.
Market women and station masters expressed similar concerns, insisting that the town council and waste management company, Zoomlion, must act swiftly. They stressed that despite paying taxes to the council, they continue to suffer from unhygienic conditions.
Currently, some passengers are refusing to board vehicles from the station due to the filth, affecting business activities.
Meanwhile, residents and workers are, therefore, appealing to the authorities to address the situation urgently before it escalates further.
