The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Akuapem North, Hon. John Evans Kumordzi, has presented learning kits to the first batch of beneficiaries under the National Apprenticeship Programme (NAP) in the Akuapem North Municipality.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony held in Akropong–Akuapem, Hon. Kumordzi urged beneficiaries to use the machines and equipment for their intended purposes. He cautioned that the items, which include various tools and machines, are government property and must be handled with care. He further stated that he and his team would periodically visit the beneficiaries to inspect and monitor the proper use of the equipment.
The MCE explained that the distribution of the learning kits is a fulfilment of campaign promises made to the people. He assured the gathering that when he assumes office as the Member of Parliament for the Akropong–Akuapem Constituency, he will invest more resources into expanding and strengthening the apprenticeship programme to benefit more young people.
Hon. Kumordzi also referenced President John Dramani Mahama’s commitment to skills development, noting that the National Apprenticeship Programme was one of the President’s key campaign promises.
According to him, the programme officially began last year as part of government’s efforts to equip the youth with employable skills.
In a related address, the Deputy National Coordinator of the National Apprenticeship Programme, Hon. Fohad Abenyadzi, reaffirmed that the programme was initiated last year following President Mahama’s pledge to Ghanaians. He explained that the initiative is designed especially for young people who did not have the opportunity to pursue formal education.
Hon. Abenyadzi noted that the programme has been structured to accelerate skills acquisition, enabling apprentices to learn practical trades within one year, compared to the traditional three to four years. He also warned that any master or madam who refuses to properly train apprentices will not be supported with equipment such as dryers, rollers, and other essential tools needed for effective training.
The National Apprenticeship Programme aims to empower the youth with practical skills, promote self-employment, and reduce unemployment across the country.
