Five Kenyan police suspected of helping an accused murderer escape from a Nairobi police cell have appeared in court.
Police launched a major manhunt on Tuesday after the alleged serial killer and 12 Eritrean nationals broke out of a police station in the upmarket Gigiri district.
He and the other detainees appeared to have escaped by cutting through a mesh wire roof.
“Our preliminary investigations indicate that the escape was aided by insiders,” acting national police chief Gilbert Masengeli said.
Police say they are seeking an order to detain the accused officers for another 14 days in order to complete their investigations.
