New Patriotic Party flag-bearer aspirant Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen has enjoined delegates to the party’s flag-bearer primary this weekend to look beyond party credentials.
He said Saturday’s process must end electing for the party a candidate capable of winning national elections and not merely a party great who will not galvanize enough support nationwide come national elections in 2012.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Thursday afternoon, Alan said it will serve the NPP no good in its search for power if a candidate put up by the party because delegates think he has been around longer than others, ends up being rejected by the nation at large.
According to Alan, there is no truth in claims that he is a new comer in the party who must wait for his turn some other time, stressing that what he seeks to do is to return the NPP back to power to steer national development.
He also discounted claims that the NDC deserves another term in office because per recent trends, parties spend second terms in government before they are voted out. He said the “two-term presidency” is not cast in stone and the NPP was capable of ending the ruling National Democratic Congress’ term after only four years.
He said results of the party’s 2008 flag-bearer elections showed the race has nothing to do with one’s age, and neither is he a stranger in the party contrary to claims by his detractors and others who may prefer other candidates to him.
He said if that were true, he would not have come second because out of the 17 candidates, he was neither the youngest nor the oldest.
Alan Prof. Kwabena Frimpong Boateng, Nana Akufo-Addo, MP Isaac Osei and Reverend John Kwame Kodua are seeking the party’s mandate to be elected presidential candidate for Election 2012 and a nationwide ballot this weekend will decide their fate.
Declaring faith in God’s divine power to appoint kings, Alan, who said he will turn 55 in October, explained that he is prepared to accept the choice of delegates and, win or lose, he will work for the peace and unity of the party and nation at large, describing himself as a symbol of peace and unity.
He plans a prayer vigil Thursday night to pray for a peaceful and successful election on Saturday.
