The President of the Concerned Farmers Association and the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Oboadie Food Ventures, Nana Oboadie Boateng Bonsu has called for strategic measures to prevent periodic wasting of food in the country.
According to him, Ghana’s rate of wasting food has been increased per the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), which represents 3.2 million metric tonnes equivalent to GH¢762.32 billion annually.
Nana Oboadie Bonsu statement follows UNEP report which disclosed Ghana’s capita food waste in 2024 was 84 kg, higher than the global average of 74 kilogramme (kg).
Speaking in an interview with Kwahu Dehyie Nana Yaw Obeng on Bryt Adekyee Mu Nsem morning show, he stated that “looking at food that is being thrown away, I believe there are certain measures to be taken to prevent wasting food.’’
‘‘Looking at restaurants and hotels, which normally waste food, are the hotels who normally prepare buffets, and most Ghanaians are shy, so when the food is there, they even feel shy to eat the food,’’ he disclosed.
Nana Oboadie Bonsu blamed religious practices, which have served as a barrier of unity, calling for public education to prevent food wasting in Ghana.
