The Corporate Affairs & Media Relations Unit (CAMRU), in collaboration with the Climate Change Directorate (CCD) and Forest Services Division (FSD), has initiated a comprehensive Anti-Bushfire Campaign in the Tamale Forest District of the Northern Region.
The sensitization and awareness creation program, part of the 2024 campaign, drew in community members, primarily farmers from Labariga, Zoborgu, Changnayili, and Kulaa. Mr. Charles Sarpong Duah, Manager of CCD, introduced the team leading the exercise, emphasizing the importance of the awareness creation program on bushfires and preventive measures.
Mrs. Joyce Ofori Kwafo, Head of Corporate Affairs & Media Relations, addressed the gathering through Mr. Karim Bukari, the District Manager of FSD, Tamale, who acted as the interpreter.
She provided insights into the causes of bushfires and urged the community members to avoid human-induced activities leading to such incidents.
Using printed and audio-visual materials, Mrs. Ofori Kwafo underscored the significance of proactive measures in preserving the nation’s forests.
“Bushfires have the potential to destroy trees planted under various Commission projects. It is crucial to exercise caution, especially during the dry season,” she advised.
Mrs. Ofori Kwafo urged community members to report any suspicions of individuals planning to set fire to the forest, emphasizing the legal consequences for those engaging in activities causing bushfires.
Expressions of gratitude from the community members highlighted their commitment to exercising caution to protect their surrounding forests. An interactive session followed, during which Mrs. Ofori Kwafo distributed T-shirts and educational materials focusing on the causes and prevention of bushfires.
The event witnessed the presence of Mr. Mbemah Saibu, Project Training Officer from the Ghana Shea Landscape Restoration Project (GSLERP), and Madam Gloria Aikins, Assistant District Manager, FSD, Tamale.
The collaborative effort aims to promote sustainable practices and prevent the devastating impact of bushfires on the region’s ecology.
